Inspired by human stories and experiences, my research examines the intersections of art, faith, and creativity within the 21st century global community. Though I feel most at home when there is a brush in my hand, I’m constantly exploring themes across a variety of mediums. I’ve worked in everything from oils, acrylics, and gouache to ceramics, screen printing, and even buttercream!
Studio Process
Research
Whenever I approach a new piece, I begin by learning everything I can surrounding the subject. I study materials and techniques alongside histories and theories.. As many of my works examine experiences, I find myself researching people and their stories too.
Ideation & Study
After the academic research comes a time of visual research wherein my sketchbook becomes my greatest tool. At this point I explore colors and potential visual directions. The most important component of this time is allowing myself the freedom to play and stay loose!
Execution
Once I have taken the time to internalize the subject and materials, I let go and let the piece take over. I enter a time of intuition driven creation; I allow the paint to guide my brush. This is usually when I lose myself in the studio and find that the music stopped playing hours ago.
“Suddenly Aware”
Below you will find a collection of recent paintings. Together they create an autobiography of sorts. As my senior thesis, I explored the idea of memories as landscapes within my own life; a journey which can both visually and mentally taken. Primarily completed from abstract layers of washes, these pieces visualize the fluidity of memory and its complexity. These pieces tell my story from pain to victory and an intense, sudden awareness of self.
